The Silo in a New Light
A handmade lamp — a small tribute to a large building and the people who see new possibilities in it.
An old grain silo stands on the harbour in Stubbekøbing. In Carina Randløv’s documentary The Silo and Us, we meet people who want to give the building a future as a place for art. The film also makes room for disagreement: what should we preserve, what should we change, and who is art really for?
My idea began with something simpler: I wanted to build the silo as a lamp. Mainly because it seemed like a fun challenge. What happens when something so heavy and solid is given a body of thin bamboo rods and paper?
I built the lamp using 3 mm bamboo rods, washi paper and small 3D-printed joints. Concrete has become a light framework, and light seeps through the paper. A building that once held grain is reimagined as a vessel for light.
In that sense, the lamp is a small tribute to the desire to try something out — both my own at the workbench and the impulse that leads people to see a new meeting place in an old silo. The lamp is on display at Theilgaards Galleri in Stubbekøbing.
